Ingredients
Roasted or dried (unroasted) yaupon leaves. Contains caffeine.
First of all, what is yaupon?
Yaupon is a tea with a rich, largely unknown history. It has deep Indigenous roots... posed a threat to King George III, and slowly died a reputational death in the early 20th century.
Yaupon is a type of holly and North America's only caffeinated plant. It's native to southeastern United States, growing from the coast and to the west as far as Texas.
What does yaupon taste like?
Unlike camelia sinesis (the plant that produces black, green and white tea), yaupon as no tannins. It's the tannins in black tea that make it bitter.
- Roasted yaupon instead has an earthy, raisin-like fruitiness flavor with an aroma of pipe tobacco.
- Unroasted yaupon has a green, fresher flavor.
How do you drink it?
Yaupon Tea can be consumed hot or cold... sweetened or unsweetened.
