The History of Virginian Teas explores the history and rich traditions behind tea in our area.


This is our basic lunch-and-learn Package for up to 20 people.

In this class, you'll learn:

  • How Indigenous communities in Williamsburg and the region used plants like yaupon, blackberry leaf, and passionflower for ceremony, healing, and daily life
  • The ways enslaved Africans adapted their own botanical knowledge using unfamiliar North American plants to create medicinal teas and wellness practices
  • Elements of the early tea trade and its impact on Virginia

What is included with the Basic Package:

  1. A 45-60 minute interactive presentation
  2. 4-5 Tea samples with palate cleansers
  3. Questions & Answer time
  4. Free samples of Jolly's Tea

This is a brown bag session that does not include lunch.

Today, there is a growing movement to reclaim native plants and honor the cultures that preserved this knowledge. This class offers a deeper understanding of Virginia’s tea history—beyond imported leaves.
